Short Biographical Note
Miguel Alfonso Martínez Echevarría y Ortega was born in Malaga, Spain in 1943. He graduated with an undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Barcelona and obtained his doctorate in the same field with honors from the University of Valencia.
He worked as a supporting lecturer of physics at the University of Murcia, as well as a statistics and statistic methods lecturer at the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University College San Pablo CEU of Madrid and at the University of Valladolid. He has also taught economics and business statistics at the University of the Basque Country. In 1992 and 1993, he was a Visiting Scholar in the Economics department at Harvard University. Since 1982, he has worked as a full professor in the Economics and Business School of the University of Navarra, where he teaches the History of Economic Thought and the History of Business Thought.
From 1983 to 1987, Professor Martínez Echevarría served as Vice Dean in the University of Navarra’s School of Law and, from 1987 to 1992, as the Dean of the same university’s Economics and Business School. He was also head of the Economics doctoral program and head of the European Documentation Center at the University of Navarra, as well as of the Business and Humanism Institute. He was also an academic member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economics and Finance and head of the economics and business publications at the publishing company Rialp in Madrid. In addition, he was member of the University of Navarra’s Business Foundation and member of Francisco de Vitoria Economics Research Institute in Madrid. At the University of Itsmo, he served as a member of the Humanism and Business Institute, as well as a member of the Anthropology and Ethics Institute of the University of Navarra and as an international advisor to the Doctoral Program at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires.
In recent years, he has focused his research on economic theory, especially on economic philosophy, where his main research lines include the political and social dimension of companies, as well as economic and business ethics. He has participated in many conferences, symposiums and colloquiums at universities all around Europe and America. He has directed dozens of doctoral thesis, as well as published articles in Spanish and international magazines. Notably, Professor Martínez Echevarría authored the publications Dirigir empresas: de la teoría a la realidad(Leading businesses: From theory to reality) and Repensar el trabajo (Rethinking work). In 2008, he founded the Politics, Economics and Philosophy Research Group at the University of Navarra.
